Ecosystem restoration or ecological restoration is a complex interdisciplinary process that needs specifically trained human resources at the local level to restore degraded ecosystems. Restoration of degraded ecosystems benefits society by improving natural resources, biodiversity and human livelihoods, empowering local people, and improving ecosystem productivity and services.

Course Objectives

  • Perceiving the global environmental crisis and the need for ecological restoration.
  • Describing the basic ecological principles and concepts underlying restoration of ecosystems including primary succession, disturbances and secondary succession.
  • Selecting appropriate methods and tools for planning and conducting restoration projects and to assess the impact of restoration in different environmental settings.
  • Designing sustainable restoration models suited to a given locality/situation.
  • Discerning elements of successful versus failed restoration projects.
